How to Dress Modestly & Feminine in Winter

by Jasmine December 2020

Skirts and snow do not seem to mix. I used to think that it was easier to just wear pants in the winter to combat the cold weather. But as I shifted more towards a feminine wardrobe and with modesty, I learned that there are ways that you can still dress warm and still look cute in colder weather. I’m sharing a few tips for essentials to add to your wardrobe for the winter season if you want to dress modestly and stay cozy.

Let’s start with your outerwear. A coat will be the biggest investment of the season. When you think about it you can wear anything else underneath, but your coat is very important. A few specific styles that cater towards a feminine, modest look include outerwear with tie waist, ruffles, bows, or wrap details. My Abercrombie coat is form-fitting but still a warm puffer. My sister has a Northface coat that has a cute feminine shape. Look for coats wool or puffed in fit n flare or wrap silhouettes.

Winter Modest Dress for Women Tips

Invest in lightweight cashmere and high-quality knitwear especially if you live in a colder climate. A big thick sweater doesn’t always equal warmth. Cashmere and wool are great sweater fabrics that can be in sleek cuts making them appropriate or layering and tucking in skirts. The sustainable brand Quince has the most affordable quality options of lightweight cashmere sweaters. I love mine and will be purchasing more for the winter wardrobe.

Opt for skirts in thick warm materials like wool or knit. Also, wear fleece leggings or tights. This way you can keep your legs warm but still enjoy skirts and dresses. Another tip is to layer tall or knee-high boots under your flowy bottoms for an extra bit of warmth.

Sweater dresses are your feminine fashion friend! I love a good sweater dress for the winter season. They are not only elegant and easy to style but quite practical for cold weather. You could go for a fitted style or something oversized.

Elegant accessories like jeweled hats, in soft pastel colors, leather gloves. To finish off your feminine winter ensemble add a touch of that style in your accessories. I have a pearl-embellished beanie that adds just the right amount of chic to my winter outfits even if I am wearing a black puffer jacket. I hope these tips can help you embrace feminine fashion even in the winter months! Subscribe to my YouTube channel to see these tips in action with upcoming lookbooks and styling videos.

My Modest Feminine Picks of Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2020

by Jasmine August 2020

(1 Midi Dress 2 Flutter Top 3 Vince Camuto Heels 4 E veryday Flats 5 Long Cardigan 6 Comfy Striped Skirt

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale starts for everyone on Wednesday, August 19! Sales can be great if you have a shopping plan. To help you with this I’ve rounded up some of my top picks in the sale for modest and feminine clothing. Many of these styles you can find similar throughout my modest clothing lookbooks. Hope this can serve a helpful shopping guide for you!

Halogen Tie Back Long Sleeve Dress

I fell in love with this dress at first sight. It’s so beautiful yet modest as it fully covered. A great example of how you can look stylish and dress conservatively. It’s fully lined and has pockets — two features I always look for in dresses. I love to treat myself to a quality dress for special events or Sundays, and Nordstrom is usually my favorite place to go for these dresses. It comes in regular and plus sizes too!

Vince Camuto Winderly Ankle Strap Sandal

I have a couple of pairs of these Vince Camuto heels in different colors, as they were featured in Minimalist Shoe Collection . The block heel makes them comfortable but still cute to wear with long skirts and dresses. I also think that the block heel is more classy because it looks practical and comfortable. There’s never a need to sacrifice comfort for style when you can have both!

Flutter Sleeve Smocked Neck Blouse

This style top was also included in my modest wardrobe essentials guide . The flutter sleeve balance well with a flare or full midi skirt to create the illusion of an hourglass figure — all while remaining quite classy. It’s made of romantic flowy polyester material and can be styled for worship, work, or going out.

Vince Camuto Stripe Vibrations Tube Skirt

This pencil skirt is made of a comfortable and stretchy material. It’s fully lined so you won’t have to worry about being see-through. I love wearing these types of skirts with a long cardigan like the one I listed earlier. It’ll be great to pair in a casual modest outfit even a comfy dress from the home look!

Leith Cozy Long Cardigan

A long cardigan was a key feature in my modest wardrobe essentials video . They’re an easy layering piece since you’ll add dimension to the outfit and extra coverage for the bum if needed. Though I love this cheaper one from H&M, I have a few other quality cardigans that I think worth the investment since you can wear over any outfit. This pick from Nordstrom is quite long so it’ll be more dramatic on my petite gals and just right for those taller.

Lexie Pointed Toe Slingback Flat

Another shoe style that was featured in my minimalist shoe video . Pointy flats are feminine and give your outfit a more polished feel. You have probably seen them styled in a lot of my recent outfit videos as they’re my current go-to shoe style.

If you’re taking advantage of the sale, I hope this little guide can be of use.  Happy shopping!

Summer Minimalist Makeup Essentials

by Jasmine June 2020

Summer makeup essentials for a dewy, sun-kissed natural makeup look! These are five products that I wear throughout the summer months, as you know I like to keep my makeup collection minimal and as simple as possible.

Neutrogena Sport Face Sunscreen

This is not makeup, but sunscreen is a very important first step for your summer skincare or makeup routine. I like that this sunscreen not only as a high SPF of 70+ but also is made of a sensitive oil-free formula. This ensures that your skin won’t break out from wearing sunscreen. I’ve noticed that regular sunscreen breaks the skin on my face, but I can use this every day with no issues.

Too Faced Better Sex Waterproof Mascara

Waterproof mascara is a must for the summer. I went swimming in the ocean with pounding waves in this mascara for hours --- so it tested effectively! This mascara has a volumizing formula that thickens, lengthens, and curls for extreme volume and dramatic lashes. I love the soft and thick look it gives my lashes. I also appreciate the formula of this mascara. Many waterproof mascaras have a wax-like feel and are hard to take off at night. I end up tugging at my lashes which is not good. However, the too faced waterproof mascara easily comes off with my almond oil, so there’s no unnecessary tension on my eyelashes.

NYX Matte Finish Makeup Setting Spray

One problem with summer is sweaty, shiny or greasy looking makeup. To avoid this, invest in a matte setting spray. A much more breathable formula than a matte powder and really helps rid your face of excess shine, especially on those sunny hot days. The NYX Matte Finish is long-lasting and a quality formula made to mattify your makeup look. I have also noticed that when I apply this setting spray (I do so with a beauty sponge) my makeup doesn’t transfer as much.

NYX Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator in Sun Goddess

You can’t have summer makeup look without a sunkissed bronze element! I love that I can use this as a highlighter or eyeshadow. This particular color of Sun Goddess is amazing for summer and a great way to spice up my minimalist everyday look. You can also use the illuminator on your body for a glowing look. A light application will give your skin that luminous and healthy goddess glow.

bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Moisturizer Gel

I kind of feel bad for featuring this yet again in a minimalist makeup video, as it seems to make every list. But I guess that says something about the product! The complexion rescue gel is literally like a second skin as it looks so natural and makes my skin look dewy and healthy. And it’s great for summer because it is lightweight and has 30+ SPF.

Shopping for Modest Swimwear

by Jasmine January 2023

Modest Swimsuits

I know the struggles of finding modest swimwear all too well. I’d think I found a nice one-piece swimsuit only to realize it was way too cheeky in the back for my liking. Shifting through tons of different swimsuits online or instore before I finally found one that covered up a bit more can be time-consuming. So as requested, here are some tips for shopping for and where to find modest swimwear, for your next trip to the beach!

When shopping for conservative swimwear it isn't just about a one-piece swimsuit. You have to avoid plunging necklines, cheeky butt coverage, or cut-outs. Honestly, it depends on what you feel most comfortable with.

Search for modest swimsuits with full coverage bottoms. Many bikini bottoms are created to show your bum so you have to be careful the back doesn’t go up too high. Additionally, you can wear swim shorts or cute little skirts. These are swim shorts from amazon that I got to wear over my swimsuits that are cheeky in the back.

You can also try takinins or rash guards. I like to get modest swim tops and shorts to mix and match the pairings. You don’t want to look frumpy so opt for lively colors and feminine styles.

Where to Shop for Modest Swimwear

Some brands may sell modest swimsuits but their selection is limited. I researched some brands that specialize in modest cute swimwear. Siena and Co. is my favorite!

Siena and Co.

Siena and Co.

Siena and Co. is a lovely small business that creates ethically made swimsuits in modest on-trend styles. The brand was born out of the founder's, Catherine, personal search for swimwear that is flattering and made of good quality under ethical working conditions. She wanted to create swimwear you can feel confident and comfortable in!

Lime Ricki

Lime Ricki

Lime Ricki’s stylish and fun collection is the type of swimwear I feel comfortable with. They sell full coverage bottoms, tankini tops, one-pieces, and swim shorts or skirts for mix-and-match.

Lime Ricki is a women-owned business and was created after the founders also had a frustrating swimsuit shopping experience. All the swimsuits are sewn in the USA, in a responsible factory in Los Angeles.

Layra

Lyra

A modest swimwear company based in London. They offer complete coverage swimwear with such cute color and pattern combinations making the conservative silhouettes very chic! LYRA brand combines the elegance of classic Hollywood with Moroccan beach cool and minimalist design.

The swimsuits are made from lightweight, fast dry, premium quality Italian Carvico fabric with High UV protection. They are all priced under $105, and I think it’s worth it because you can get a stylish high-quality swim outfit to wear over and over again!

Lanuuk

Lanuuk Swimwear

I fell in love with Lanuuk's Swimwear pieces! They have nice selection of modern and modest swimwear for a vacation or tropical getaway.

The company was founded on the basis to create full coverage swimwear that does not compromise on femininity, style, quality or comfort. Each product is made with love as Lanuuk constantly strives to attain the highest product quality alongside ethical and sustainable working practices.

calypsa

Calypsa.com

An online modest swimsuit company with a HUGE selection of swimwear. You can buy a custom set by picking a top and bottom of your choice. Modi makes versatile, easy to wear swimsuits. Their customer appraisal is phenomenal and their selection of modest swimsuit brands and styles has a look for everyone!

I recently filmed my personal Modest Swimwear Collection on YouTube. I hope your search for modest swimwear ends here and that you are able to find some great pieces with these tips! Enjoy your summer and swimming activity in modesty and comfort.

10 Minimalist Fashion Style Essentials

by Jasmine Ty May 2020

Amidst a fashion world of loud colors, prints, and styles, I find myself drawn to minimal, timeless outfits. Minimal style is fresh and clean, and hinges off the notion that less is more. There is truly beauty and elegance in simplicity. It embodies the essence that style is all about elegance not buying the most attention-grabbing piece.

Don’t get me wrong I love bold colors and dramatic silhouettes from time to time, however, the minimal style strikes a perfect mixture of classy, timeless with a modern twist and chicness. With that said, I have made a list of 10 common clothing pieces ( + how to style them) that are essential to achieve the effortless minimal style.

Black high waisted trousers
A perfect pair of black trousers can take you from the classroom to a night out. They give a much of sophisticated and timeless feel than skinny black jeans, yet, you can style them the same way. They can be dressed up with heels or worn casual with a simple pair of a Adidas. Black trousers are a no brain-er when it comes to minimalist style. I personally think a high waisted slimmer style is a wonderful blend feminine and masculine style.

Silk Camisole
Masculine, clean lines can get a little overwhelming with minimal style, so a silk (possibly lace detailed) camisole is a nice flirty and light touch to your wardrobe. I love the texture contrasts you can create with a silk camisole. Minimal style may have subdued in colors and prints but it keeps your outfits interesting by mixing textures. Try pair the silk camisole with a knit cardigan or leather jacket.

White Button Up Blouse
Do I even have to say much? A button up top is timeless essential for any style. It’s versatile and is great for layering. Minimal style outfits tend to keep this basic quite simple with the top buttons undone and partially tucked into your pants.

Straight Medium Wash Blue Jeans
The recent trend of straight jeans has been honestly so refreshing! The straight cut flatters more body shapes and gives off classy casual vibes. Like with the black trousers, I go for a high waisted to accentuate my feminine waist to offset the lack of curves in the jeans. Denim jeans are great for a more casual look and can be paired with neutrals to keep the look minimal and fresh.

Blazer Jacket
I could not research minimal style without seeing this jacket constantly. Its masculine inspiration, simple cut, and texture make it a wonderful candidate for the minimal style. Pair it over any outfit, in any color of your choice, and voila your outfit is complete!

Neutral Color Turtle Neck
Cozy cashmere, knit, or cotton turtle neck top seems to be a minimalist favorite. Though they are limited to fall and winter, depending on where you live, they are so timeless and effortlessly chic. I remember when I dreaded this style, but now I find myself reaching for it more often!

Crisp White Tee
A simple white tee is a basic must have for everyone. A crisp crew neck style is the perfect addition to a minimal wardrobe. The styling options are practically endless and effortless.

Black Booties
These booties elevate any outfit and add an edgy touch. They are defiantly a basic for most wardrobes and are an example of a modern classic piece. I wear black booties with any outfit I want to look chicer or that’s looking super plain. You can go for a high heel or no heel, though I’d leave the high heel for my stilettos.

All White Sneakers
Sneakers are practical essential considering they’re so comfortable for walking. The trending fashion options out there like Adidas, Converse, and Vans make sneakers the perfect comfort piece with compromising style.

Shirt Dresses
Classic shirt dress or the t-shirt style is a comfy and causal way to wear a dress. I love the effortless look the button dress has when paired with a black pair of booties. The t-shirt dress is great for class or running errands along with sneakers a denim jacket.

That's a wrap! Hopefully today's gave you a gauge into a minimal style wardrobe. Minimal style doesn't have to be boring, in fact, I was thinking about doing another post about styling and putting outfits together for this look. Do you like the minimal style? Are there any essentials I missed?

Modests Wardrobe Essentials: 10 Basics for Feminine Style

by Jasmine Ty April 2020

On my YouTube channel, I create a variety of modest lookbooks. When I was revamping my personal wardrobe tailored towards a modest and feminine style finding out what basics to include was a bit challenging. The common wardrobe basics like black jeans and crop tops would not work well for a more conservative, classy style.

So, in this latest video, I share my modest wardrobe essentials. 10 building blocks for the perfect feminine wardrobe. Something like this I would have appreciated when clearing out my wardrobe, so I hope this is helpful.

Included in this blog post is a shopping guide of all the items mentioned with links and similar items. That way you can start your modest wardrobe too!

You can shop the items below. Save the photo to use as a shopping checklist 😊

How To Build A Capsule Wardrobe

by Jasmine Ty August 2018

Gather Inspiration, Find a Direction
Each season I like to create a mood board to start planning my capsule. Having an idea of what styles, patterns, colors and overall vibe you want for your wardrobe can really help you focus. You can grab inspiration from Pinterest, your favorite entertainment, magazines, or blogs. By creating a mood board, I can determine the aesthetic or style I want for that capsule wardrobe.

Create a Color Palette
A harmonious color palette makes a collection of clothes into a thoughtful wardrobe. You will be able to look at your capsule as a miniature closet, as it wore. By sticking to a color palette, you will be able to easily mix and match your items.

For each capsule I choose between 5-8 colors, including neutrals. If you are having a hard time selecting colors that go together, look at prints such as florals or get some inspiration on Pinterest.

Create Outfits as You Go
One of the main goals of a capsule wardrobe is to be able to style plenty of outfits from a few key pieces; so, it is important to think about your outfits as you put your wardrobe together. For each potential clothing piece ask yourself: How do I plan on wearing this? To style this item, what other pieces do I need to add to my wardrobe? Can I wear at least 3 outfits with this item? This will save you from possible frustration when you are testing and styling your outfits.

Make a wish list, listing each item along with some brainstormed outfit ideas. Start off the basics essentials (white tee, denim jeans, black skirt etc.) then add seasonal clothing pieces (winter coat, summer floral dress, fall jacket etc.), and lastly top it off with fun, possibly trendy pieces.
As a rule of thumb, I usually have more tops then pants (as tops must be washed each wear) and make room for completer pieces like cardigans, jackets etc.

Shop Your Closet
Before you go running to the mall or online shopping, take a trip into your closet. What items do you already own? Is there anything in your closet you can switch out instead of the original item on your wish list? The idea behind a capsule wardrobe is minimalism and the notion that less is more. Using a capsule wardrobe as an excuse to buy an entire new wardrobe defeats the purpose.

For my back to school capsule wardrobe I worked with items I already owned in my closet. I had to sacrifice some of my wish list pieces, but I felt satisfied with being able to make the most of what I had. I realized I didn’t have to go shopping after all!

Mindfully Shop
There will be pieces that you will have to go out in buy, especially if you are starting your wardrobe from scratch. Use this as an opportunity to shop smart. Write out a detailed list. For example, for my winter capsule wardrobe I specifically noted I was looking for a midi, pleather skirt that was high waisted. Writing something vague like “leather skirt” even if it’s just for your personal reference, being specific helps you stay focused when shopping.

Be patience by awaiting sales and comparing similar items from different stores. You want to buy pieces you can truly wear repeatedly, so try not to compromise on quality. The pieces you purchase should be investments you’ll value forever.

Test & Document Your Outfits
Now that you have all your wardrobe pieces let’s begin the styling! As mentioned earlier, you probably already have outfits in mind, since you planned your outfits as you went along. Try on your outfits seeing what will work --- play a little dress up! You may realize that an item isn’t as versatile as you thought or doesn’t go well with the other pieces. You may have to swap piece out and in.

Document the outfits so they’ll be ready to go when you’re getting dressed in the morning. You can simply take photos of the outfits’ spread (like I love to do on my Instagram) or create a visual guide on Canva or Photoshop. There are also apps like Stylebook and Cadwell to organize your capsule wardrobe. I personally use Stylebook to manage my current capsule wardrobe, it is simple to use, and I love how it tracks how much you wear the pieces in your wardrobe --- giving you a great idea of what you truly value.

Hopefully these simple steps have helped you create your own capsule wardrobe. Have you ever tried or considering trying a capsule wardrobe? Subscribe for more posts about how to make the most of a small wardrobe. Enjoy the video accompanying this post on YouTube as well!
